Health Insurance for Nutrition Services

Have you checked out if your health insurance covers nutrition services? Many insurance companies will cover services that are rendered by a Registered Dietitian.

The first step to finding out what type of Nutrition Service coverage you may have is to call customer service number on the back of your insurance card and ask the appropriate questions.

Questions to ask your insurance company:

Do I need a referral from my primary or specialty care provider?

Is my diagnosis covered (ICD 10)?

How many visits are covered?

Will I have a copay?

Have I met my deductible?

Sometimes insurance companies will ask you to provide them with a CPT or ICD 10 diagnosis code. The CPT codes that Registered Dietitians use are 97802 and 97803. The ICD 10 codes are unique to your health condition and will be provided by the referring Physician or can be obtained from the Registered Dietitian if the referral has been made. If you request, provide the ICD 10 codes of Z71.3 and Z72.4 which are preventative diagnosis. Health conditions that are commonly covered by health insurance include overweight, obesity, hypertension, pre-diabetes or diabetes, and high cholesterol.

Some insurance companies will reimburse you directly for the fees paid to out-of-pocket network providers. If you this is so, please request the necessary paperwork so you can submit that to your insurance company.
